For a week now, our homeland has been burning covered by forest fires. For one week now, the traitors of the homeland from four sides have set our forests on fire. In 32 provinces, forest fires have broken out in 150 places.
The dictionary definition of what a forest is is as follows: It is a terrestrial ecosystem made up of various types of trees of a certain height and size, including a complex of shrubs, herbaceous plants, fungi, microorganisms, insects and animals, formed naturally on the soil of a part of the earth’s surface. It takes at least 100 years for a forest to form.
29% of Turkey’s territory is covered by forests. These areas are decreasing with each passing year, with a trend towards desertification. However, today our subject is an organised and deliberate attack against our homeland. How can the fact that fires are occurring in 150 places in 32 provinces be explained? Where and in which period of history has such a thing happened? Such an event could only happen during the period of the rule of the fascist AKP. They caused fires in 150 places without hesitation, without bother. They openly refused to intervene to extinguish the fires. As if admitting that they had caused the fires, they decided to pass a law under which the burnt forest areas could be developed for tourist sites. 98% of forest fires are caused by human activity, but the AKP government is apparently determined to reach the 100% benchmark.
For days our homeland was on fire, people were killed in the fires, our people’s houses and livestock were burnt. Our people were left homeless, without a single penny in their pockets. People spent the night under the roofs of their burnt houses, sleeping on the mattresses they managed to save from the fire. The houses, the people’s relatives burnt in the fires. The AKP government is responsible for this, it is the one that killed them.
WHY IS THE AKP NOT EXTINGUISHING THE FIRES?
To sum this up, in a few points.
1-They themselves cause these fires.
2-They cause the fires in order to turn the freed forest areas into a source of profit, to build hotels, villas and palaces.
3-Because of the fact that the public contract for the suppression of the fires was “won” by a private company.
And most importantly:
4-By destroying the forest areas in Turkey, to prevent our war of people’s liberation, which is expected to develop in these very areas, and to be able to take complete control of the forest areas.
We know that the forest fires were quite deliberately caused by the fascist government of the AKP. These are not the actions of the PKK or the HBDH – Peoples’ United Revolutionary Movement(an alliance between the PKK and several leftist organisations from Turkey, established in March 2016, ed.), as the bourgeois media claim. Even if the areas burnt in the fires started in 150 different places in the four corners of the country remain outside the scope of the “tourism promotion law” adopted on 18 July, these areas can be expropriated for “public benefit”, and so can be used by hotel companies. Also, areas such as meadows, pastures and grasslands will be able to be developed and used for ‘tourism needs’. The law was passed on 18 July, on 28 July the forests had long started to burn. For this we say, whoever steals something from the people also knows how to find a convenient cover for it. The fires were started by the AKP government and were quite deliberately not extinguished.
The AKP government, as it does with everything else and in this area – fighting forest fires, has brought privatisation into play. In 2019, the government started announcing “public contracts” to fight forest fires. All those the political establishment and the oligarchy in a combined effort set on fire our forests and did not extinguish the fires. Because the longer the fires last, the longer the “fire fighting” goes on, the more the private company hired for this purpose will earn. The contract between the state and the company states that even if there are no fires, the state is obliged to pay a certain amount to the company. That is, with what they have taken from us, they burn, destroy and loot. Then again, with what they have stolen from us, they build up on the forest areas and make us buy the housing built by the state company TOKİ. Mehmet Özeren, the mayor of the municipality of Gündoğmuş, in Antalya province, one of our provinces most severely affected by the fire, who is a member of the ruling AKP, said: ‘For our citizens whose homes have become uninhabitable, TOKİ will build new houses that will be paid off over 20 years. Even those who have very old houses will wish that their houses had been burnt down so that they can now have new ones.”
With these words, he practically admitted how organised this whole scenario is from the lowest to the highest level of power in the country. The Minister of Agriculture and Forests, Bekir Pakdemirli, said that “we are fighting the fires well enough”, and with these words he seemed to mock the people. But at the same time, he admitted that there is not even 1 plane equipped to fight fires.
The governor of Dersim (Tunceli), on the other hand, warned the people who wanted to put out the forest fire in the municipality of Hozat saying that “entering the forest is prohibited”, thus he helped the fire to spread there.
Everything is clear as day. This is not a disaster, but a mass murder. Thousands of hectares of forest burned, 9 people were killed in the fires. We are not going to accept all this, every inch of our homeland is ours, we will hold you accountable for all the sufferings you have caused our homeland!
